  • Insider Union workers began an indefinite ULP strike on June 2.

  • Members are using their creativity to explain why via signs on physical and virtual picket lines.

  • Here are five images that best explain why the Insider Union is withholding our labor until we get a fair contract and how you can help us.

The Insider Union is on a unfair labor practice (ULP) strike

In 2022, Insider changed members' health insurance without bargaining with the Insider Union. In response, the NewsGuild of New York filed an Unfair Labor Practice charge against Insider alleging that it had unlawfully changed members' health care coverage, and in May 2023, the National Labor Relations Board found merit to that ULP.

SpongeBob, famously a comrade and employee who has also gone on strike, is mad and would like Insider to help us resolve this charge by paying us the money owed as a result of this illegal change.

We also want fair wages and affordable healthcare costs because as a sign on the June 2 picket line pointed out — those are pretty basic human rights.

This is an important issue to our members because since Insider changed healthcare plans, many of them have seen their healthcare costs increase drastically — sometimes by over 1000%.

Our workers are also increasingly worried about being replaced by AI

Our reporters are increasingly worried about Insider's eagerness to use AI. And as other media outlets reported, Global Editor-In-Chief Nich Carlson's company-wide email praising ChatGPT on April 13 was followed by a layoffs announcement on April 20.

Our furry friends want you to hold the line

The Insider Union has many furry supporters like Gingham, who is adorably asking you to hold the line while his brother Pixel impatiently waits for a fair contract.

Digitally holding the line means not clicking on Insider stories, or watching Insider videos, until further notice. You can also tell everyone you know that we're on strike, sign up to picket with us if you’re in New York City, donate to our hardship fund, and send a digital letter to our bosses.

Insider management deserves so much side eye

Insider Union members want to get back to work! We're just waiting for management to give us a fair contract. In the meantime, join us in giving them bombastic side eye — perhaps, even, criminal offensive side eye as well — while we continue the fight.

Business Outsider is a strike publication of Insider Union which is a unit of The NewsGuild of New York.

Follow our Twitter for updates on the strike, and if you enjoyed this content and would like to throw in some cash for our members who are losing wages every day that we strike for a fair contract, feel free to visit our hardship fundraiser here. Wanna help us tell the boss to reach a deal? Let Nich Carlson and Henry Blodget know you support us by sending a letter.
